Welcome to the next mission set of your child’s mentorship program with Moxie!
All Moxie learning missions are based on National Standards. National Education Standards are the learning goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. Moxie’s mission sets are based on social-emotional learning standards developed by CASEL: https://casel.org/core-competencies/
Here’s a brief overview of what this mission set looks like:

MISSION SET THEME
This mission set’s theme is Navigating Nighttime. Mentors will help Moxie learn how nighttime differs from daytime, what most nocturnal animals do at night, and what many humans do before they go to sleep. Coping mechanisms for dealing with nightmares are also offered in this mission set.

MISSIONS
There are eight missions in this set. These missions are designed to help children think deeper about the theme of navigating nighttime and translate some of what they have learned into their everyday lives. In this Mission Set your Moxie mentor will:

- Participate in a two-part mission in which they use a flashlight or other source of light
to create shadows - Have conversations about how to get a good night’s sleep
- Create a story with Moxie about Hoots, an owl who sleeps during the night because he doesn’t know he’s nocturnal
- Talk about dreams and learn a strategy for dealing with nightmares
- Listen to, and identify, different nighttime animal sounds as a way to calm down before going to sleep
- Participate in a two-part mission in which they learn stretches that Knox does before he goes to sleep
- Summarize what they learned about navigating nighttime for the robots at the G.R.L.

THINK ABOUT IT
What do your own sleep habits look like? How does your sleep schedule impact your emotions and productivity during the day? Are there any changes you can make to your bedtime routine to improve the quality of your sleep?

SUPPLEMENTAL ACTIVITIES
Help your child bring lessons learned with Moxie into everyday living.
- Did you know that Moxie has a bedtime mode? Try it with your child to help them wind down for bed with breathing exercises and bedtime stories!
- Make a dream book with your child. If your child wakes up and remembers a good dream, they can draw a picture of it in the book! If it is a bad dream, they can use the strategy they just learned with Moxie to draw a better ending to the dream.
- Create a schedule with pictures on it so your child can keep track of what they need to do before bed. This may encourage them to take ownership over their bedtime routine.
- Use a flashlight to make shadow animals on the wall with your hands or other objects you have in your home.
- Have a “camping” night in your living room or backyard. Talk about what animal sounds may be heard at night, and how sleeping outside is different from sleeping inside.
- Do yoga or stretches with your child before bed! Ask them about the stretches they learned with Moxie and try those, or do some of your favorites!
