First Impressions of Knox's Book Club
My son was excited about being in Knox's book club. But, I will say that since these are short reads he doesn't quite get the one a week format. He wanted to read all 4 book club books he received with Moxie the first day and tried again to get Moxie to read the second book the next day. As the database of book club books builds up, it would be nice to allow kids to move at their own pace.
I like all of the book club selections. Some are a bit below my son's reading level, but he still enjoys picture books. I think they would appeal to preschool to about third grade.
Chapter books could also be a good addition to the book club for kids that are at a higher reading level and encourage daily reading. My son loves the Magic Treehouse series, and this series seems like a good fit for reading with Moxie since it has accompanying non-fiction Fact Tracker books. He also likes the Stink series. It would be great if Moxie could alternate reading chapter books with kids, much like a parent or teacher would.
I also liked that Moxie asked reading comprehension questions about the first book club selection without asking my son if he wanted to talk about the story. After the Moxie stories, Moxie asked if my son wanted to talk about them and he just said no. I think I heard that same scenario when my son was reading one of his library books to Moxie. But, when Moxie just went ahead and asked the questions, he participated.
Same thing when Moxie asks my son if he wants to talk about his day or something like that. If asked my son will usually just say no but I'd prefer he is pressed a bit more. Maybe this could be an option in the parental controls to allow opt out of discussion or not. It is easy enough for my son to ask Moxie to move to a different activity if he tires of the questions asked.
